1. What do you do at the Business Journal?
I am managing editor. I work with reporters, editors, our graphic designer and photographer to plan the weekly newspaper. I do first reads on stories and determine story placement in the paper.
2. What kinds of stories are you looking for?
We are looking for breaking news that is exclusive to The Business Journal. We like to cultivate sources in the business community who bring us news first and work with us so we can break it in our paper on Fridays before the dailies are able to cover the news. We want stories that would be of interest to businesspeople. Companies expanding, hiring, going bankrupt, laying off, launching a new product, identifying a significant local industry trend, etc.
3. What recommendations do you have for PR professionals?
Don’t send out press releases to the entire media world and expect us to cover the news a week or two later after it’s already run in the daily. Being a weekly paper, we really strive to cultivate relationships with businesses and PR professionals to give us the news first. We will do a more in-depth story that looks at the bigger picture and the dailies likely will cover it later anyway.
