Fear of Flying

No, I don’t mean the book by Erica Jong.  I mean the REAL fear of flying, which we all have to do, especially if we have clients out of state.

The news today about the extreme turbulence that hit the Continental Airlines flight from Brazil reminded me of all the trips I’ve had to take.   Luckily, I can only remember one or two that were really bad.   The worst was a flight about 10 years ago from Chicago to Rhode Island.   The plane was delayed because of high winds at our destination. About 30 minutes from landing, we hit the winds alright.    I’ve never been in a plane that fishtailed so much.   It was eerie.

An extremely large, confident-looking man of about 350 lbs was sitting next to me, and we were both very quiet during those last 30 minutes.   In fact, everyone on the plane was.   The pilot came on the intercom and said, “We’re not sure where we’re going to be able to land – it might be Hartford or it might be Portland – the winds at Green (airport in RI) are making it tough for planes to land.”   Not exactly comforting words.

It was so foggy and blustery that we couldn’t see anything out of the windows.  When the plane finally touched ground, we weren’t sure where we were.  Turns out, the pilot did navigate us safely into Green Airport.   Everyone on the plane clapped when we landed.

I KNEW it was a nerve-racking flight when I saw all the MEN on the plane file into the men’s room once we got into the terminal.  Usually it’s the women filing in.

Traveling is both exciting and challenging when you’re in public relations.    Safe travels, everybody.

My fear flying is that you are in a more vulnerable state than that of a car. You are not driving. I’m not a control freak but, look what we hear about in the news; pilots drink, foreigners take over the cockpit. Oh lets not forget that you are breathing diseased air. My fear would include paying too much for a ticket to only get 2 square feet of room to sit in for 4 hours. And nothing to eat. I think flying is for the birds. Its a hard sell for me. Take in some americana and drive! I don’t how the people who travel to Europe do it.
