Tweeting while working, OK for some?

By on May 27th, 2009 In Jobs, Social Media

A week does not go by without me stumbling across the good, bad and unexpected uses of Twitter. While I sometimes find it too much when people provide updates about every minutiae of their lives (prompting a lot of unfollowing!) I also see some interesting uses.

So I thought of asking you how you relate to some of these recent examples. Maybe a good way to hear from the heavy users, silent followers, and even the sceptics.

What do you say about these folks microblogging?

Good question, Angelo. A lot of companies are seeking ways to exploit social media while at the same time wrestling with developing company policies to manage both content and work productivity issues. IBM has had “social computing guidelines” since 2005 that now include Twitter and Facebook. GE set up a “Tweet Squad” this month to help their boomer and Gen-X employees use social networks.
Met Life and others are adding internal social media networks. If corporate America is adopting this so rapidly it won’t take long for mainstream adoption such as by local police departments.

I hadn’t read some of the examples you used (but have now) and think that the police, amber alerts and even astronauts tweeting from space seem to be great uses of Twitter. However, when it comes to tweeting during surgery, well, that’s another story. My colleague Johna Burke (@gojohnab)wrote her take on this the same day your wrote your post and I think they complement each other nicely: http://www.burrellesluce.com/freshideas/?p=240
