Tomorrow’s job seeking skills: tweeting, typing and sms

By Angelo Fernando on October 27th, 2008 In Social Media

I hear a scary story over the weekend. A friend had approached his son’s high school teacher to see if there was some extra help the boy could get in writing. The answer was something like this: “Don’t worry about it. We first expose them to broad concepts, and toward the final year, we focus on language and writing technique.” The ability to express oneself as an add-on!

Then I came across this today. A job applicant asked about typing skills, filled out a space in the application with “text messaging.” Is this a sign of things to come?

I am a big promoter of educators incorporating web 2.0 tools. Some have moved in already. I interviewed Professor Alan Lew earlier this year, who was then using a wiki in class. Today he’s using FriendFeed.

I worked in a PR department several years ago which hired a new college grad (with a journalism degree)for an entry level position. He had no concept of business correspondence or protocol. All of his writing used lower case letters and contained texting abbreviations. He didn’t last very long.

Being conversant in web 2.0 is now a minimum qualification. It’s a brave new world…
