The scoop on social media
Pun intended, considering the ice cream metaphor Lee LeFever uses to explain social media in plain English.
His company, Common Craft creates custom videos that are slick (as in minimalistic) and remarkable for their low-tech sketches, geek-free explanations and ‘animation’ that often involves a finger gestururing at a sketch.
Watch it here and share this with the next person who asks you what social media is all about.

The presentation method is very clever and really delivers on the “plain English” promise, both in style and copy. However, I found Social Media clip mostly helpful as an exercise in metaphorizing — too much time on ice cream and too little time explaining what the heck SM actually is. The unit on podcasting, however, was rather useful, explaining what it is, why it’s important and how to use it. I have to say that the unit on Twitter just reinforced my belief that Twittering is about as useful an activity as counting ceiling tiles or making sure the total wattages of the light bulbs in my house all come out to a number divisible by 9. It would seem that Twittering is a modality yet to find an actual purpose. (By the way, “Zombies” is an excellent and highly practical guide to identifying and dealing with the undead. Watch out Len…I’ve got my eye on you.)
