The Naked Truth About Buzz

By Len Gutman on May 30th, 2007 In Social Media

PR professionals who ignore the power of viral video are going to become dinosaurs (if they are not already). You can send out all the press releases you want, but we’re probably already at the tipping point in terms of bypassing the mainstream media and going directly to the end user.

Last week at the Seth Godin event in Tempe the marketing guru addressed the old school practice of what he called spamming media to get your client in the newspaper and I had an “a-ha moment.” What’s the real value of getting your client on TV or even in print? With so many ways to reach consumers (i.e. customers) it is simply more efficient to reach them directly.

When a kid in Tucson can simply strip down to a jockstrap and become famous overnight it truly is a new paradigm for buzz.

Wonderful comment. Do not use a shotgun. Marketing is about targeting your audience, and PR is a subset of marketing. Who are you trying to reach, why and how do you reach them? Go back to the who, what, why, when and how of journalism.
