Social media discussion tomorrow

Howling Zoe’s Amanda Blum and Jobing.com PR Director Joe Cockrell will lead a free coffee discussion on “Social Media as a Hiring Tool” tomorrow at 11AM at Jobing.com’s “Community Spirit” Room. Jobing is located near the Biltmore at 4747 N. 22nd St., Phoenix.

Amanda explains the genesis of the event:

About a month ago, the ASU career center ran a “roundtable” on social media that I went to… a lot of major valley employers did as well. It was basically a few girls who worked for the career center, none of whom were seniors talking about how much they like myspace, and the guy leading it all expousing on how second life was really the future of social media. In a number of instances, questions were asked that I was able to answer…. For instance… so much of the talk was about how to defensively use social media (whether to google someone for their facebook pages if you’re hiring) and what the legal implications were. I mentioned using social media proactively… twittering a job mention, the possibilities of searching for talent on facebook, etc. After the talk, a number of HR directors came up to ask more about specifics- and I ended up with a few speaking gigs at major local companies- how to set up a facebook account, creatively use SM…. I noticed more than a few people talking about this very topic, including Joe over at jobing.. so I suggested we sit down and gab about it over coffee, find out what people are doing, etc. Then I thought… why not have the real roundtable now? Jobing.com was nice enough to host…so free Starbucks for all. So, come one, come all… particularly for those in our twitterverse… come on by, lets have a casual convo and find out what peeps are doing to hire, refer, find work, etc….
