tylers right (stepping aside for lightening strike). not sure scott monty's opinion is entirely that valid here.

meetups, tweetups, etc are suppossed to be an extension of the free platforms that bring them about. i think many organizations and companies are trying to seize this concept as a way of showing they're down w the lingo.

really, there is nothing about this event different from all other PRSA events. its not a tweetup, its a PRSA cocktail hour, just like all other PRSA cocktail hours.

Now, if PRSA REALLY got social media, they would hold an ACTUAL tweetup, make it free, publicize it via twitter and enjoy the purpose of a tweetup, which is to bring in new people you'd otherwise not have at the event. Maybe those people decide they really like PRSA, and pay to attend the next non tweetup.

and yeah. What Pat said.

I wasn't aware of a rule book on the use of "Tweet Up".
If you'd like to attend, we'd love to have you come to the event.

I looked at Mr. Ghimire's blog post and found this comment.

I’m going to chime in here for two reasons:
1) My name was already invoked above (by Benn)
2) I coined the term “tweetup,” so I think I should have some say as to how it’s being used. See http://www.wordspy.com/words/tweetup.asp for the details.
Personally, I don’t care if a tweetup is free or includes a cover charge. The point of a tweetup is it’s a face-to-face meeting of two or more people who use Twitter. Period."

Not a Tweet-Up if you're charging. It is bad PR though.

Charging for your PR event is one thing, but using the term "tweet-up" and still charging means your understanding of social media is fairly limited or just plain wrong. Use of the term is misleading and awkward.

A more appropriate use of Twitter for this event would be to create a hashtag and append it to your tweets. I would think as a PR firm you would have an expert on hand who would recognize this.
