MLB to test Twitter waters with draft tweets

mlbdraftWay back in the 1990s a friend of mine was a highly touted high school baseball player who was expected to be a top pick in the Major League Baseball Draft. I remember it took all day for us to finally learn that he’d been taken by the Boston Red Sox as a special pick between the first and second rounds.

Tuesday when the MLB draft takes place in New York, prospects and fans need only wait a few seconds to find out who has been picked — thanks to MLB’s little experiment with Twitter. In fact, MLB.com is providing an interactive extravaganza for the draft that includes live web updates, expert and player interviews and a live broadcast on the league’s new television station the MLB Network.

Social coverage of the draft will include the participation of tweeters such as MLB.com Draft expert @JonathanMayoB3, who will also be serving as on-air talent for all three days of the Draft; and reporter @LisaWinstonMLB, who will be writing the up-to-the-minute coverage for MLB.com. In addition, MLB.com has created a Twitter account devoted to the Draft (@MLBDraft), where fans can stay updated on every piece of info as it becomes available.

“Even more revolutionary, though, will be the online Twitter presence of some of the top prospects in the Draft, who will keep fans updated on their own personal experiences.”

What more could a baseball geek like me want?
