McCain, Romney, Clinton, Biden: The MySpace Generation?
Speaking of social media…
I personally am a member on MySpace and I noticed something interesting the other day. When you link to the login page there’s a section featuring “Cool New People.” Arizona Senator John McCain was featured as a “cool new person.” This struck me as odd.
The next day it was Mitt Romney. Then Bill Richardson — who I friended.
Clearly, all 17 potential presidential candidates see social networking as an important component to their campaigns. Especially with respect to younger voters.
But the big questions is: Will the man or woman with the most friends win?
I’m very interested to see if that will translate. If people are motivated enough to “friend” a candidate, will they be compelled to vote as well? I mean, you vote for your friends, right? At least that’s how it worked in high school.
Personally, I would vote for Richardson. That’s why I friended him in the first place.
Speaking of first place, here’s the most recent tally on friends.
1. Obama - 87,164
2. Clinton - 81,175
3. Edwards -37,872
4. McCain - 34,288
5. Paul - 22,170
6. Romney - 21,822
7. Richardson - 15,248
8. Biden -9,641
9. Brownback - 7,925
10. Dodd - 5,908
11. Hunter - 5,085
12. Thompson - 4,585
13. Gravel - 4,435
14. Tancredo 1,855
15. Gilmore - 1,359
16. Giuliani — Anyone’s guess. You must be friends with him to view his page as it is set to “private” (so much for government transparency! )
17. Kucinich - Dennis doesn’t appear to have any friends from looking at his page.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Who are half of these people and what do they stand for?” Well, log on to MySpace and click on impact to view all of the candidate’s pages… you really can tell a lot about a person by their profile.
Friend them if you feel compelled. Vote for them if you dare. ![]()

Robyn,
If the election were held today I’d vote for Richardson also…but only because Al Gore isn’t in yet!
Totally fascinating post. I am not a MySpace person but I might join just to see what’s going on with the candidates.
The only one of these stats that surprises me is Ron Paul — I thought he’d be higher. It will be fun to watch these numbers as the election rhetoric heats up…
