Is this comment spam?

By Dan Wool on March 25th, 2008 In Social Media

In November, Len posted about the proposed Decades Music Theme Park in Eloy. Today, we received a comment on the post from a local PR person involved with the project.

The intention is clear, the PR execution is not. So, we’re stuck. And we can use your help.

We can approve the comment because it’s relevant, delete/ignore it because it’s old, mark it spam because it’s inappropriate, or write a “how to pitch us better” post.

What do you think? Is it relevant or is it spam? We hope you’ll comment below and get us off the fence.

Thanks to your input the Arizona State Senate
passed Senate Bill 1450 last week by a 17-11 vote. This will facilitate the construction and financing of Decades Music Theme Park here in
Arizona!

Now the bill goes to the Arizona House of Representatives and we need your help to get it passed there before it goes to the Governor’s Desk.

All of this is happening quickly. Please email the following members of the Arizona House Commerce Committee today! We need a big victory there to keep the momentum going.

Their emails are below. Please include a subject line referencing
“Support for SB1450 and Decades Music Theme Park.” Thank you for all
your support.

I say write a “how to pitch us better” post. It is obvious that this is just a generic post that they cut and paste. It’s not that hard to write a few extra lines to make it relevant/personalized to the person or publication that you are pitching to and that small effort really makes a world of difference.

I think it’s spam–for Valley PR Blog. Sure, it works in some forums (like more traditional news media), but I don’t necessarily agree with Valley PR Blog posting this comment. I think this blog is better kept as a place to comment on what you see happening in the media world–like Len’s initial blog–than to publicize specific happenings.
That aside, you’ve already done them great service by creating a new posting about this. But perhaps our collective comments will help to direct future decisions.

I say it’s SPAM as well

I’m not sure it’s spam, per se, which I define as unsolicited mass commercial e-mail. True, the blog didn’t specifically solicit a business relationship with the company, but you did open the door. Nevertheless, it’s completely unsuitable. As the previous commenter noted, it’s clearly a cut-and-paste job with no particular regard for the audience. Furthermore, why is ‘desk’ capped?

I say, bury the blaggard with your delete key.

It has been marked as SPAM.

Thanks to everyone for the input both here and offline.

I say, Freedom of Speech. John Peter Zenger. If you don’t understand that reference, what are you doing in Public Relations and what paper mill did you buy your diploma at?
