Hot topic last week

“The conversation often spins off the road, leaving civilized discourse covered in the muck thrown off by the spinning wheels of anger, indignation and mindless political ideology.”

You think Ed Montini was talking about talk radio. He could have been. He was discussing KFYI‘s Bruce Jacobs’ rant on illegals, last Wednesday. But that anger-indignation observation was his attempt to explain what a blog was. One of his readers called in to say he/she didn’t understand what a blog was at his blog post: “It sounds like something I would get stuck in if my car drove off the road,” she had said.

It’s a sobering thought. Even as the blogosphere grows at the rate of about 12,000 blogs a day, people have strange ideas about what blogs do, how to get started, and what might they replace or become. There’s a lot of education to be done, much experimentation to be undertaken.

Take last week’s announcement that 12 major corporations had pulled together what they called a ‘Blog Council‘ –an attempt to get up to speed on this phenomenon. The conversation about this initiative definitely went off road a bit, with bloggers wondering if calling it a ‘council’ was presumptuous, predicting it would fail, and being quite critical. Shel Holtz was optimistic that it could produce useful results.

It’s a development that bears watching.
