Happy Birthday Creative Commons!
Creative Commons turns five today. It was started by Lawrence Lessig and Cyberlaw and intellectual property experts in 2002.
Why is this important to us?
Intellectual property rights and DRM, for instance –just two of the hot topics this year- will definitely shape digital products in the public domain that we produce for our employers and clients.
Speaking of public domain, you may be interested in something called “Copyleft” -a riff on copyright for software rights, but with an interesting dimension: passing along the freedom to others to copy or improve upon software that’s in the public domain. None of this kind of new media thinking, including of course the mashups on YouTube and the changes in social networking would have emerged if not for Creative Commons.
