Going viral to get votes

By Charlotte Shaff on July 9th, 2009 In Social Media

The Arizona Diamondbacks have been on fire this July, not only on the mound, but also online. In an effort to drum up more votes for 3rd baseman, Mark Reynolds in the Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game “Final Vote” the campaign has gone viral to gain publicity and excitement for the team. They’ve even enlisted the help of a political power hitter, you may know the name…McCain.

Brett Hansen of Fox Sports Arizona has been impressed with the numbers and fan support coming in so far…

“Using social media has allowed us to increase the number of fans on our Facebook page and our Twitter followers as well. When we started to push voting for him on Sunday, we had 2,009 fans on Facebook. At this moment there are 2,354 (+345 since Sunday). The use of Facebook in this has definitely helped the number grow. Also, we currently have 3,794 followers on Twitter. On Sunday, that figure was just over 3,300.”

Shaun Rachau, VP Communications of the Arizona Diamondbacks said,

“Because of social media tools like Facebook and Twitter, we believe the votes cast for this season’s “final Vote” will easily surpass last year’s numbers. Getting an endorsement from Sen. John McCain that has more than 950,000 followers on Twitter and then getting the mayor of Mark Reynolds hometown in Virginia to declare “Vote for Mark Reynolds Day” to a market of 1.7 million people is huge.”

If you’d like to cast a vote for Mark, you have until 1pm MST today (Thursday, July 9th.)

I track Dbacks referenced on Social Media using my product – justSignal. I’ve done the analytics on the data to determine if the endorsement of Senator McCain had any effect on Mark’s chances to make the All Star Team.
