“Fab 32″ launches with more than a press release

Intel’s $3 billion factory, a.k.a. Fab 32 just opened here in Chandler.

I was impressed at the way they built their Press Kit for the facility. Apart from the obligatory press release, there are several documents, photos and video –what amounts to a social-media press kit. There are fun facts that give a writer interesting story angles about what the guys in bunny suits do in a building that looks like an aircraft hangar.

For instance: Intel’s next generation chip, codenamed “Penryn,” has shrunk in price by a factor or millions. Instead of giving us just the technical stats, it says: “If car prices had fallen at the same rate, a new car today would cost about 1 cent.”

And if you have no idea what a “transistor” means in the world of wafer-thin multi-core chips, consider this fact: “More than 2 million 45nm transistors could fit on the period at the end of this sentence.”
