E.B. Lane, Local First gettin’ sticky with it
New media tools are being invented and reinvented at a furious pace, and I’ll admit even a geek like me can’t seem to keep up with all the new tools. But it appears E.B. Lane is out in front, and it recently launched a couple of new campaigns with a tool called Stickybits.
Basically it works like a Twitter hash tag, bringing people together around a particular campaign or event. You create a campaign, you get a unique activity code, then you print bar codes out that folks can scan with their iPhone or Android phone to attach photos, videos, text and more.
E.B. Lane is working with Local First AZ to promote central Phoenix using Stickybits, and the result is a very interesting stream of CenPho life. Here’s the stream: http://stickybits.com/c/6490493957346
“We put stickers with Stickybits bar codes all over downtown for April’s First Friday. Since then, people from all over the world have scanned and uploaded pictures, videos and comments to the bar code,” explained E.B. Lane’s Melanie McBride. “Quickly forming on Phoenix’s Stickybits bar code is a collection of local Phoenix treasures from Bunky Boutique to Moira Sushi Bar and Kitchen.”
Like a lot of new media technology, I like the concept but I’m not sure of the business value. I have to admit I think this campaign is great and I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out. I’d be interested in hearing from others on how they are using Stickybits or how they think it might be useful. Kudos to E.B. Lane for continuing to be so new media progressive.

This is really similar to QR Codes, which have taken off in Japan, but haven’t quite made a big impact in the U.S. market yet. We’ve recommended clients using QR Codes at tradeshows, but haven’t had any takers. Anyone else had luck with QR Codes?

At the recent PRSA Travel & Tourism conference we discussed both sticky bits and QR codes and the travel sector is starting to use these with some success. One example shared was success with QR codes and guided venue tours. Two other examples to watch are the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (using them in ads) and United Airlines (using QR codes) for mobile boarding passes.

Stickybits…sounds very interesting…
We have been using the bar-code system at our new busines in Scottsdale that opened in October…The Home & Design Idea Center…it’s the first of it’s kind to open in North America.
