Breaking news: I have 300 ‘friends’

By Len Gutman on November 20th, 2008 In Social Media

facebookimageLast night I “friended” two more people on Facebook and noticed I had now reached 300 friends on the social networking site. My initial thought was, if I died, how many of these so-called friends would show up to my funeral?

Of course I made a snarky comment about this milestone on my Facebook status and one of my old college friends sent along this article from MSNBCabout what to do when someone you don’t know (or don’t like) tries to friend you on Facebook.

I loved the story about the guy who invited 700 online “friends” to meet at a local pub and only one showed up! I also liked what Ariel Waldman, community manager for Pownce, said:

“Everyone has different communication protocols. The important thing is defining what your own protocols are.”

A few months ago I tried to friend someone on Facebook and she rejected me. But in her rejection she said she prefers to use Facebook for social networking and uses Linkedinfor business (and never the twain shall meet). At first I thought she was being a pain in the ass, but then I realized she simply has her communication protocol well defined and I had to respect that. I don’t have my communication protocol defined, which is probably why I have 300 freaking “friends” on Facebook and more than 450 on Linkedin. Who are these people?

Friends don’t let friends friend non-friends.

I’m a fan of freaking Facebook friends — much better than frickin’ friends.

Hmmmmm…. friend protocols… for me it is they need to include a message if I don’t know who the hell they are.

Hey! I’m one of those friends you friended. And would absolutely 100% show up for drinks. ;-)
