May PRSA Media Breakfast
“Working with Student Media – at ASU and Beyond”
When: Thursday, May 21; 7:30am to 9am
Where: Scottsdale Plaza Resort, 7200 N. Scottsdale Rd. in Scottsdale
Cost: $25 for non-members; $15 for members
Details: If you have performed any media relations in the past two years, you have almost certainly worked with members of the student media. Whether via targeted pitching to University news outlets such as the State Press, Web Devil or the Cronkite News Service or via pitching to traditional news outlets such as the Arizona Republic or Phoenix Business Journal, the student media are everywhere. And, did you know that to fulfill class requirements, journalism students at ASU must get some of the articles they write for their classes published by traditional media? It is more important than ever that the lines of communication open between student journalists and local public relations practitioners so we can educate each other about both of our mediums during these ever-changing times. We are pleased to have several of the driving forces behind the student media to talk about the best methods to reach out and best practices moving forward. They include:
Steve Elliott, who is the print news director for Cronkite News Service at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In that role, he leads a team of top students covering public policy issues for newspapers and Web sites around the state. He came to ASU in 2006 after a 19-year career with The Associated Press. His AP tour took him to Honolulu, New York, Milwaukee, San Francisco, Phoenix and back to New York, and his positions ranged from reporter to editor to bureau chief to business executive. His last position with AP was director of internal communications in New York.
Jason Manning, who is the student media director at ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication (bio to follow)
Summer editor of the State Press, ASU’s hugely popular newspaper
RSVP: Please RSVP by Monday, May 18 to Mary Young via phone at (480) 968-7217 or via email.
Location: Scottsdale Plaza Resort, 7200 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale, AZ
