PR is not a black and white world

One of my all time favorite songs is “The Beauty of Gray” from the band, Live. I can’t get the words out of my head as I type out this blog post about measuring the value of PR. Because evaluating what you do in PR is not really black and white.

It’s not a black and white world, to be alive

I say the colors must swirl

And I believe

That maybe today

We will appreciate

The beauty of gray

Do your clients appreciate the “gray” world of PR? How do you explain the value of what you do for them beyond the reports and strategic plans? Do you really feel like they “get it?

There are days when I really love what I do because I know I am making a difference in a client’s business. Other days, when dealing with some of those “black and white” clients, I want to bang my head on the wall.  We work in such an intangible industry at times. No matter how you explain and show value of your hard work, some clients don’t seem to get it because they are looking at their bottom line and whether or not the phones are ringing after a PR campaign. Gray doesn’t always translate. What do you do to show the beauty of what you do…the beauty of gray?
