Bad Journalist Blog?
I follow a former journalist turned PR pro on Twitter. She posted a comment about a post from Bad Pitch Blog that there needs to be a Bad Journalist Blog, too. What do you think?

Indeed, that would be grand. I actually
went off on a rant on this subject and emailed
it to your site a month ago but perhaps it didn’t come through.
I have a few items to send you for such a compilation.

Agreed. I seriously sit at my kitchen table every morning, pen in hand, ready to copy edit my way through the paper while enjoying my breakfast. (I will not disclose which paper, but it’s a big one!) With that said, I wish the folks at Bad Pitch Blog would learn AP Style. Pretty sure it’s “e-mail” not “email,” but who knows, maybe it’s changed as of late?!?
Here’s what I will say, sarcasm aside… I have many friends who are journalists – all great people. I also know many journalists who refuse to respect PR as a credible profession. My response to these folks – there are bad journalists and there are bad PR professionals. Don’t discount us all. Enough said.

I couldn’t agree more. I am also a former reporter turned PR pro and am sad to admit journalism as a profession seems to be deteriorating. It is also not fair to genearilze “the media” as some reporters are incredible and do serve society.
Were there to be some official “bad reporter” blog or list, that may motivate some reporters to be more balanced and accurate.

Thanks for your comments. And, thanks Charlotte, for the post. I am madly working to get my new blog together that focuses on this subject, so be on the lookout. Also feel free to send me stories, examples or any comments you like and I will post them to my blog. In the meantime, send your thoughts to jenniferjwindrum@gmail.com. Thanks a bunch.

A “bad journalist blog” could be a great way to keep journalists on top of their game. However it is not always the reporter’s fault; there are sometimes circumstances and people involved that effectively make the reporter look bad. So this blog could be very useful as long as those who are mentioned are truly at fault and have more then one journalistic offense under their belt.

It’s a great idea! I am a former journalist who tried hard to be fair and accurate and report with integrity. Most journalists do but, like all professions, there are bad apples. This blog will help weed them out, identify them by trends, number of complaints, specific examples, etc.

Bad journalism blog? As I’ve said before here, if it would involve AZCentral.com, or Republic, no one has that much time.
I really appreciate Meredith Duling’s response. I’ve had my writings slaughtered at many news outlets, including the Denver Post where they started my story on what was Page 3 of my copy and ended the story with Page 1 of my copy. Totally incomprehensible.

Did you see this:
Start-Up Attacks Media Bias, One Phrase at a Time
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/08/start-up-attacks-media-bias-one-phrase-at-a-time/?ref=technology
This is sort of wild but maybe there’s a future where every reporter has a SpinSpotter bias score. And a ratings site where PR people can rate journalists is already being worked on.
Imagine… you could run searches in CisionPoint or Vocus based on not only beat, but also bias score and ratings.

I would add Steven Greenhut from the Orange County Register to that list. The man is an odious misogynist, with a deep seated hatred of all government employees. He solicits “honest opinions” from local county employees, and then any who are critical of the executives or elected officials (who he is close friends with) he gives their names and comments to the bigwigs, so that the critical employees face disciplinary action.
When one lady called him out for his behavior in a blog, he had her blocked and banned.
