The passion of a reporter online
There is something about people with passion. No matter if its the janitor who happily mops the floor while whistling or a volunteer who donates a majority of their free time to a charity. They care. For the past few months, I have gotten to know a local reporter through Twitter and have admired her passion for work, family and even a good sports game. Her name is Jan Buchholz (@jreneebuchholz) and she covers the Real Estate and Transportation beats for the Phoenix Business Journal.
Jan is quite transparent with her tweets, sometimes voicing frustration with interviews or issues involving PR pros. She never complains, but instead explains why the issue at hand is making her job as a reporter a challenge. And she can do it in 140 characters or less, too! I don’t think I have seen any other reporter speak this honestly online and I appreciate it. I also learn from it. Definitely should make a PR person think about what they are doing when they don’t return a call or have a client contact the reporter directly asking why they quoted their competition and not them. Jan has a blog that you should check out, including a post all about that lame PR situation last week. And if you are on Twitter, follow her. She may be that voice you need to hear sometimes when it comes to being the best you can be at your job. Because you are passionate about PR, right?

I love it when reporters are this honest and blunt. It’s refreshing and helpful.
Someday I’ll have the courage to blog about the shoe on the other foot dropping — all the weird stuff I’ve seen from the press and ad people alike. Like the ad rep long ago who chastised Honeywell for not advertising with them: “You think we’re good enough to send announcements to, but not good enough to advertise with?” Wow.
