Zonie Report chimes in on Republic layoffs
Thought you’d all enjoy Adam Klawonn’s post on the Republic layoffs today. As a former Republic staffer and current editor of one of the few independent news outlets in the state, his opinion is worth a read.
If you haven’t discovered The Zonie Report yet take a look around. It’s real journalism! There’s a novelty in Arizona.

Russell, Jim (both of them) and so many others that have been let go will be sorely missed – great journalists and great people.

I am devastated over this. First the Tribune, now this. I could rave on and on about many of the folks on The Dreaded List and how hard-working, thoughtful, good-hearted, ethical, motivated and inspiring they are.
This makes no sense to me. With all the dead wood floating around over there, you think they could have chosen some less integral staffers to ditch. I think some (much?) of it must have been political.
The good news in all this: Perhaps it will open the door for reputable but alternative news sites like the Zonie Report to take over from traditional media. Phoenix Mag has been doing great stuff lately, too, as Adam pointed out.
It seems incomprehensible that the public would just sit back and let solid news disappear in favor of TV sound bites, radio talk show blowhards and knee-jerk partisan bloggers. Right? Please tell me I’m right.
