What to do when Stephen Colbert smears Arizona?
Hard to miss the rap we are getting with the new immigration bill Jan Brewer just signed.
Without getting into the politics of it, I like to hear what this community thinks of the bad mojo that we seem to attract. Stephen Colbert’s rant the other day (“Word of the day: ‘No Problemo‘) was probably the worst thing I’ve heard in a long time. Bill Goodykoontz was right when he said you know you’ve made the big time when you become the punch line in ‘The Colbert Report.’
People like John McCain should get on to shows like this try to ratchet things down. He’s got the knack of delivering better punch lines –like this one about ‘intentional accidents!‘

We’re the punch line because we deserve to be. Some of us would actually like to see it ratchet up in favor of seeing federal action… and a new legislative body next election cycle. So sick of these so called “Republicans” we have in the AZ Legislature. Disgrace to my party.

Well said, Matthew – thank you! Colbert’s segment was brilliant and spot on (sadly). McCain is his own punchline these days, after the “maverick” nonsense, so I don’t see him as an effective remedy. The remedy must come from genuine leadership informed by an awakened citizenry. Things are messy right now, but more people are waking up and national attention, while humbling, is a good spur.

I’m afraid there’s not much we CAN do. As has been pointed out by the Daily Show and other such media types [real or fake], politicians forget that everything they say is recorded–and can be used later for laughs and to point out hypocrisy of the most egregious form.
When Russell Pearce or J.D. Hayworth makes fiery speeches canted to their support base, unfortunately to the rest of the country, it comes off like extreme right-wing diatribe.
And the recent spate of legislation, coupled with the state’s financial woes leading to the attempt to dump the most vulnerable among us from their safety net [no matter how you feel about it, that's just been a PR nightmare!] and the deep divisions inherent in modern society just lends itself to gobs of political satire. It’s gonna get worse before it gets better, that’s for sure.

It’s getting ugly, social media wise, as Betty Beard reports today in the Republic: http://ow.ly/1DSPM

I think it would be an excellent idea if, before people expressed an opinion, they actually READ THE D*MN LAW.
Maybe Thomas Jefferson’s “educated electorate” is too much to hope for.

John, you are right, was thinking that this morning. Any interview should begin with “Have you actually read the law?” followed by “Did you know that illegal immigration is already illegal?” and assorted other questions about what other countries do to to protect ehri borders and why do they think the feds have done so little to help with this issue….
