Troubles continue for Gannett
Mike Sunnucks in the Business Journal is reporting today that Gannett is cutting 1,000 positions from its newspaper division companywide. Again Gannett claims the layoffs are due to ”lower advertising and classified revenue.”
I’m going to continue to argue that Gannett’s troubles are due to the lousy quality of their product.

And let’s not forget another Gannett outlet in town that appears to be having challenges. Have you noticed the high amount of station promos Channel 12 is running during the Olympics as opposed to paid ads from local advertisers? Just one week before the beginning of Olympic coverage Channel 12 is pitching advertising opportunities ON AIR in promo spots during the news. It appears to me the station is having trouble selling its Olympic ad inventory. Wonder why? Is this a reflection of declining TV audiences or a poor sales job from Channel 12?

Actually, most stations love the opportunity to put their best promos out as much as possible during highly watched events (Super Bowl, network season finales, etc). Maybe they didn’t sell as much as they hoped, but I am sure their promo department is loving the increase in attention to their image campaigns.

I agree with Len’s comment on the quality of the product. Re-running the same articles over and over again, sometimes in the same issue, is only one example of the Republic’s decline. Getting rid of seasoned reporters and replacing them with inexperienced “multiplatform” employees (note I don’t call them journalists, or even writers…) isn’t helping either. And then there’s the coming reduction in the broadsheet page size. Look for the big cuts to come after the election.
Ch. 12 is a joke. Steep downhill decline in recent years, like local TV news everywhere.

I’m surprised nobody here has been talking about the wave of buyouts that recently hit the Republic. I understand they were hoping enough people would take them, but now they are going to start laying people off. I never heard a total on how many took the buyouts, but it was a lot of senior people.
Channel 12 has become all pay for play on many of their segments.
So much for “journalism.”

Len, Homer and PRChick said it best. I got my “ID” where you log into azcentral.com locked out because I was attacking managing editor Jeff Dozbaba’s management skills on it.
When a newspaper goes down, it starts with the managing editor on upward. Don’t blame the interns at the Rep. They’ve got great jobs paying fantastic wages. They could not get those wages anywhere else with as little experience as they have.
So what is the shape of the Tribune? I haven’t heard anything about it. Living in the area of I-17/101, it’s like it doesn’t exist. Why hasn’t it combined with its West Side paper to form a state newspaper taking on The Republic for that role? It amazes me – the West Side paper is in the heart of the biggest growth in the nation, yet that paper focuses on Sun City only.

Richard is right. You really can’t blame the interns. Any intern would kill for a gig at a paper that size. While they aren’t pulling down tons of cash, they are doing better than they would elsewhere. The sad thing is that they aren’t getting much in terms of mentorship and guidance. But hey, wadda you want?!?
No kidding on the Trib! A two-newspaper town sure would be fun to see. I just find so many of the Rep. reporters to be sooooo lazy these days. The upside to the interns is that they are actually eagar to write.
