Heat City: Coppola to Republic
Heat City reported over the weekend that East Valley Tribune editor Chris Coppola is leaving the organization to take a job at the Arizona Republic.
Things are certainly up in the air over at the Tribune. Also over the holidays, the Trib announced it will continue publishing after its Dec. 31, 2009 deadline while a prospective buyer, Thirteenth Street Media, continues to finalize details of a purchase.
One thing is for sure: if the Tribune does come back from its death bed it will do so with a very different cast of reporters and editors. Coppola had been with the paper since 1990 and was undoubtedly one of its best assets. It’s hard to blame anyone for looking for another job, and the Trib’s loss of Coppola is certainly the Republic’s gain — and others are sure to move an as well. Obviously the faster the Thirteenth Street Media deal gets done the better for everyone involved.

Coppola – a dieing breed. A REAL journalist.
Makes me wonder if he’ll fit in with Lovely’s Ladies.

Chris Coppola and also sports columnist Scott Bordow: I worked with both, and they’re two of the most hard-working and well-respected journalists I’ve ever had the pleasure to know. Hopefully the Republic will treat them right and use their talents to the fullest.
As for the Trib, yes, they’re losing some terrific people, and maybe I’m a foolish optimist, but I think there’s great potential. Freedom is so dysfunctional; any other company should be able to come in and compete. Community and local-local news online and, yes, still in print, is already where it’s at, but the Trib in its old incarnation (and the R, for that matter) aren’t really nailing it yet.
