Free Tribune?
Greg Patterson at Espresso Pundit reports that the Tribune will soon be distributed free on East Valley and Scottsdale driveways.
While this feels like a rumor, especially with a new publisher taking the reins, it is entirely plausible.
The bet would have to be that the Trib could monetize the increase in overall circulation by charging more for ads — enough to make up for and ultimately surpass its current paid (but dwindling) subscriber base. That’s a mighty high bar.
The Trib would also have to find a way to deal with/consolidate news operations (cost savings?) since they already freely distribute newspapers in many local East Valley communities, including Ahwatukee Foothills News, Chandler Connection, San Tan News Sun, etc. Perhaps a Republic-style rebranding of these outlets is coming?
If Patterson’s sources are correct, this would be a bold move.
