Ex-Trib staffers launch political news site
We’ve written a lot on this blog about new media models and where the public is going to have to go to get their news coverage given the decline of the print world. Well, if you’re like me and you believe wholeheartedly in the importance of the fourth estate you’ll want to support The Arizona Guardian, a web site launched Jan. 5 by former Tribune staffers.
The Arizona Guardian will provide daily news coverage of the state capitol and Arizona politics “as gathered and written by veteran Arizona political reporters and editors.” If early indications are anything the news site is off to an impressive launch, with columns by Senator Jon Kyl, a feature about Rep. Kyrsten Sinema, and news about pink slips at the Attorney General’s office. Right, left and no holds barred! There is also a daily blog known as The Guardian Angel, which purports to be the “voice of reason and light and, OK, shameless gossip.” Fun stuff.
The site’s leaders are Patti Epler, Paul Giblin, Mary K. Reinhart and Dennis Welch, all veterans of Arizona politics and government. They are also the force behind the new business model, as along with another partner the team serves as equal co-owners of Arizona Guardian, L.L.C., the Guardian’s parent company.
“What probably stands out most about this new business model is that control of the company rests with the reporters and editors,” Giblin writes on the site’s About Us page.
We’ll have to wait and see if The Arizona Guardian has legs and if it can sustain itself on an advertising-based model. One thing is for sure, the so-called mainstream media will probably be watching closely.

I am biased, because Mary K. is my daughter-in-law, but I’m really happy this site got launched and I think it will make it. The whole ticket to making these sites work is partnerships and low overhead. Where newspapers got bogged down is in administrative overhead. If you have reporters and editors and outsource the admin functions, it can make it.
