Finally some good news for local news

By on February 17th, 2010 In Media

The East Valley Tribune is reporting today that a deal has been struck for the sale of its Arizona outlets to Colorado-based Thirteenth Street Media. The $2.05 million deal still needs court approval, but that should be a formality.

The news here is that the deal includes all of Freedom Communications’ local assets — the Tribune, the Sun City Daily News-Sun, Ahwatukee Foothills News, Glendale/Peoria Today and Surprise Today, as well as Arizona Interactive Media Group, which publishes the Clipper, a monthly direct mail product, and the EastValleyTribune.com, YourWestValley.com and Ahwatukee.com Web sites.

This is good news for the employees of these outlets as well as those of us in the PR community concerned about running out of outlets to pitch. Hopefully the new owner will infuse some cash — and energy — into these important community resources.

It will be interesting to see 24 months from now which of these properties are still publishing…my bet is less than 50%.
