Update: Cuts reported at Tribune following court decision

By Len Gutman on March 10th, 2010 In Media

The Phoenix Business Journal is reporting this afternoon that The Tribune has laid off “several dozen” following yesterday’s court decision in favor of the sale of the newspaper and related holdings to 1013 Communications LLC, an affiliate of Thirteenth Street Media, whose president is Randy Miller.

While no names were mentioned in the report, it does say that “there are 14 people left in editorial.” I assume the 14 is at The Tribune alone and does not include the Ahwatukee Foothills News and Sun City’s Daily News-Sun.

And Nick Martin over at HeatCity did a great job covering the story following the court decision. Martin reported yesterday that Freedom Communications told employees following the decision that they’d know more about their futures within the next two days.

HeatCity also has an update to this story at http://bit.ly/9mWLNo that includes the names of those laid off.

Hi,
Heatcity mentions Ahwatukee Daily news… Valley PR mentions Ahwatukee Foothills News. Which one is correct?
Thank you!

I really feel for those folks who were laid off. That just sucks. And I suspect it will create a few more people in Arizona who are now in PR instead of journalism.

I’ve been working with some of those folks for more than 15 years. I hope that they land on their feet and that something even better is in store for them!

Ahwatukee Foothills News is correct. The other paper in the deal is the Daily News-Sun in Sun City…

We will most certainly feel a big impact from this from the PR end even and I always felt the East Valley Trib and the other papers (Ahwatukee Fotthils and Daily News-Sun) were some of the most responsive so from an overall standpoint of getting your news covered this does suck. Not to mention, I am sad for those being layed off…but as Tony says there should be something better in store for them!
