Coppola handles Trib changes with class

tribIt’s been a tough few years for the newspaper business, not just nationally but here in the Valley as well. I’ve been quick to hand out criticism, so I felt this morning it was worth noting that East Valley Tribune Editor Chris Coppola’s recent column about the changes at the Trib was straightforward, honest and appreciated.

Chris lays out the changes and doesn’t pull any punches. He closes with this:

“We may be criticized along the way, but that’s OK, too. We can handle the feedback and really do appreciate it.”

I’m not sure what the future of print journalism holds, but I do know that as long as there are solid journalists like Chris still around we’ll still find a way to receive the news that we need. It may be online, or it may someday be through chips embedded in our heads! Who knows.

Meanwhile, the Trib also rolled out a new web design today. It is clean and easy to navigate and has a nice little Web 2.0 feel. It also focuses primarily on the cities of Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert and Queen Creek. The good news too is that the online version will continue to be a “daily” news source even as the print version moves to three four days per week. I read the Trib online often because I like to see how it covers the same stories as the Republic, and also because I live in the East Valley and like to get my hyper-local news. I will continue to read online and let’s hope for our sake this little experiment works and the Trib can stay afloat with its new model.

I think Tribune prints four days a week, not three days as you mention.

Mr. Coppola is a solid journalist and has been around the Valley for a very long time. Great to see him get the accolades he deserves.

Mark my words, the Trib is better positioned for success than the Republic right now:

Agreed. Kudos to Coppola. I thought the announcements re: recent changes were handled very well. The transparency and honest communication is much appreciated.

every newspaper in arizona will be bankrupt by the end of 2009. they already were losing money, now that the car dealerships will be cutting their advertising to zero as they all go out of business, 20% of the revenues of the newspaper business disappear in the first quarter, then another 10% in the 2nd quarter. the writers could all win pulitzers and the paper will still cease to exist by Q4 ’09. good thing the government gave $10 billion taxpayer dollars to goldman sachs so they could pay their executives bonuses, now there’ll be someone to feast off the carcass of the newspaper industry.
