12 News to move downtown with a “Today Show” feel

12 News (KPNX-TV) will relocate to the Republic Media (publisher of The Arizona Republic, azcentral.com, La Voz, and other print and digital advertising solutions) building in downtown Phoenix. Construction is expected to begin in July with the move complete by early 2011. 12 News has been at its current location at 1101 N. Central Avenue since 1956 and the building will be put up for sale.

The ground floor of the Republic Media building at 200 E. Van Buren will be reconfigured to provide a main studio for 12 News newscasts and local programming along with interview space, an outdoor studio, a cooking set and two outdoor camera positions.

“The new studio will allow our team to connect with viewers like never before,” said John Misner, president and general manager at 12 News. “Much like NBC’s “Today,” we know a live audience will bring energy to our newscasts and provide a true downtown destination no other station in the market can match.”

The Phoenix Business Journal did a great report on Gannett’s revenue losses, with newsprint advertising falling eight percent in the reported quarter.

Evidence Gannett doesn’t know how to operate in the 21st Century – utilizing 20th Century management thinking. As I was taught in my MBA training, if railroads – an empire at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries – had envisioned themselves as a transportation company instead of railroads, they would have pioneered air travel.

Interesting. KGW, the NBC affiliate in Portland, Oregon, recently did this and now has a “Studio on the Square.” Wonder if it is the direction a lot of the local NBC stations are headed.
