12 News shares Feb. sweeps info

By Charlotte Risch on February 29th, 2008 In Media

Do the other stations send out news releases with info on their sweeps ratings? I’ve put in requests, but so far, I only get them from Ch 12. Anyway…here is some info from their Feb 2008 Nielsen Ratings Release. I am curious to know how the other stations did…if you happen to have info, please share!

KPNX12 News at 10pm extended its historic reign as Arizona’s most-watched newscast, according to February Nielsen Media Research household (HH) ratings surveys. The market’s signature newscast finished on top with a 6.9 HH rating/12 HH share, up 8% in HH rating from November, the last official ratings period. It is the local newscast in the market with the brand strength to build upon its primetime lead-in, outpacing NBC prime by 33% in HH share.

12 News at 5pm(4.8 rating/9 share) finished on top, stretching its lead over its nearest competitor by 23% in HH rating. 12 News at 6pm (5.2 rating/9 share) also finished #1 and grew 13% in HH share from November. The momentum continued at 4:30pm where for the first time ever 12 News Up Front (3.6 rating/8 share) tied for first place in both rating and share!

Despite the writer’s strike and lack of major sporting events, NBC prime finished second in the market on Channel 12 and the station finished tied for the lead sign-on to sign-off in HH share.

Hah!
The other stations in town aren’t going to send out news releases unless they win the Sweeps. In Phoenix, that’s almost always 12 News. So don’t hold your breath.

Some of the websites covering TV and radio with boards like Radio-Info.com and TVSpy.com sometime post the local TV ratings. In general, channels 3 and Fox 10 dominate in the am, with 12 dominating in the pm and KPHO 5 and Fox 10 often in the top three.

The key demo numbers might look a bit different but this is generally the pattern. However, Univision 33 often beats all of them in the younger demos.

Great points and yes, its a little known fact (i have found at least) that Univision kicks butt in ratings among all the stations.

What I don’t understand, if the other stations are slow to send out releases is why they don’t send out a release and tout their good points. I used to work at a local station. We had station staff meetings where they had the sales dept tell us all the great ways we did do well in the ratings…even though we knew in the general scheme of things we were last. Sales has to go to their advertisers and show good stuff…so, why not share with the promotion department and tell us how you did better in some ways. In the 12 News release they don’t mention what station was #1 in prime…seeeee…..you can find ways to still talk about the positive! :)
