Would your clients care if you disappeared?

Every morning, I get numerous emails from Media Post, Business Know How, Marketing Profs and others. When I read Marketing Prof’s “Get to the Point” today, it really made me start thinking about how we as publicists must not only keep the “brand” of our client strong in the public and media’s mind…but also the brand of service we offer our clients.  The email discussed John Moore, of Brand Autopsy blog and his series of posts asking readers whether or not they would care if brands such as World Market, Eddie Bauer and Wells Fargo went out of business. I never worked for a PR firm, but did work at an ad agency and I saw how easy it was for a client to leave and move on to another agency.  Sometimes, the client would not want to stop working with a certain account executive or staff member at the agency and would try to find a way to keep them around in some sort of fashion.  When I stopped doing some freelance PR work a few years ago, some of the clients I was working with heard I was leaving and asked me to do their PR after their contracts were up. That was an awesome compliment to me. I offered something to them that they did not want to lose.  Its something I try to remember every day as I work with my clients.

Whether you are an indie, a freelancer or employee in PR, what do you daily that builds your personal brand in service to the client?  If you “went out of business” tomorrow…would the client even care?
