We’re just short a few chicken wings, that’s all
A survey conducted by Weber Shandwick for The Combos (R) brand recently ranked the top 50 “Manliest Cities” in America. Where is Phoenix in the lineup? #23, behind places like Columbus and Chicago but ahead of Toledo and Dallas. Huh?
The rankings were based on six criteria. I understand including sports as a factor, and manly occupations (construction workers, police officers), and maybe manly lifestyle (number of pickups and motorcycles), but “salty snack sales” and “concentration of manly retail stores”?
To wit, the survey took into account the number of masculine stores and businesses in each city, including BBQ and chicken wing restaurants….
Well, maybe they’re onto something. I prefer sushi over chicken wings, myself. But to place Columbus, Ohio ahead of Phoenix? C’mon.
I love the idea of surveys as PR, however. Hats off to Weber Shandwick.

odd that we weren’t found the manliest…as a survey done by PainePR for Old Spice a few years ago found us the sweatiest.
Surveys as PR aren’t anything new…when I worked at Edelman in the late 80s we set up our research division in our St. Louis office. We did all sorts of surveys for all sorts of clients and publicized the results…everything from health care initiatives to what flavor profile people prefer in their BBQ sauce.

Funny stuff! What I want to know is this: what did Baltimore, Chicago and Washington, D.C. do in the last year to jump so many spots on the list? And what kind of emasculating things are going on in Cincinnati, Oklahoma City and Dayton, OH?

Hey, Columbus isn’t that badI
)
But yes, the answer is precisely in the headline. Columbus is home to many, many fast food/restaurant headquarters. Most of them more prevalent in the Midwest like Max and Erma’s or Donato’s Pizza, as well as Wendy’s, White Castle, etc. Wendy’s are on every street corner. Buffalo Wild Wings began in Columbus.
I also think having the second largest student body in the country and Proctor & Gamble HQs just south of the city as factors in purchasing salty snacks.
This is why Columbus is routinely named one of the fattest cities in America too.

Not knocking Columbus, really – I’m actually an honorary citizen of Marion, OH.
Sweatiest city? That warrants an “ew.” And yes, surveys have been around a long time as a PR method. They are one of my favorites…
