Sheriff Joe’s press conference

By on May 4th, 2010 In Hype!

I like to know who attended Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s press conference. I always thought a press conference was called when you had something of value to offer to the media.

So when I received a text alert yesterday to say that Arpaio won’t run for governor, I was tempted to wonder what other bits of non-news might get the media to come over with cameras and notepads. My list:

  • Mayor Phil Gordon announces that Shakira and he would not be considering taking part in an upcoming Dancing with the Stars.
  • Governor Jan Brewer calls for an urgent press conference about how she and former Governor will no longer be Facebook friends

(Can you think of a few more? Do submit!)

The point being, are press conferences still the way to get on the agenda, and  enter the news cycle?

The best person I’ve ever seen on camera handling press inquiries is Jim Paxon, http://www.paxonthefireguy.com/ I’d go to any press conference he held – well worth it.

Ack, what a publicity doggie. A simple tweet would’ve sufficed: “Not running for guv – f’reals…”

You gotta give him credit for his media manipulation skills. It’s hard to believe that last week’s buzz that he was planning to announce he was running wasn’t a plant that therefore made his news conference with no news a must for reporters. He must have been laughing all the way to the party to review the tax-payer funded clips.

Another view of what constitutes a ‘press conference’ these days, straight from Robert Gibbs, President Obama’s PR guy:

Watch the video – it’s fun!

From MediaPost/PRNewser transcript:

“Les Kinsolving: Thank you very much. In view of President Franklin Roosevelt’s 998 press conferences, why has President Obama held not a single White House press conference since last July?
MR. GIBBS: Lester, what would you – let me ask you this. Can I ask you just – I just have one question.

Les Kinsolving: You can ask me as many as you wish.

MR. GIBBS: Excellent. I’m just going to use one. When the President took eight questions from members of the White House press corps at the Nuclear Security Summit at the Washington Convention Center, what would you call that?

Les Kinsolving: That was not a press conference.

MR. GIBBS: What would you call it?

Les Kinsolving: It was a select few.

MR. GIBBS: A select few what?

Les Kinsolving: A select few reporters. It was not a White House press conference.”

From the volume of (unsolicited) e-mails I get from “Jan Brewer for Governor” announcing or defending various gubernatorial actions and attacking various presumed foes, I’d say that the always-electioneering sitting guv holds press conferences via HTML e-mails. I hate to sound too out-of-it, but is The Brewmaster attempting to set a record for scorched earth politicking? Like Sheriff Joe, apparently anyone who has ever looked cross-ways at her is in her cross-hairs.
