No one has “handlers” anymore

By on September 16th, 2009 In Hype!

Gone are the days when celebrities and politicians had PR “handlers.”   Communication trends are pointing to more and more self-expression, whether it’s on social media networks or in ‘real life.’

How else do you explain Kanye West, Serena Williams, Joe Wilson?    What a contrast they are to the quiet dignity of someone like Patrick Swayze or Farrah Fawcett.   And I never thought I’d mention all these people in one sentence.

Singly and collectively through PRSA we need to speak up for the value of PR, even in times of individual expression.  No wonder foreigners think we’re a bunch of rude, pampered babies.   Even my 2-year-old grandniece has better behavior than these clowns.

They still have handlers, what they no longer have are manners.

Maybe the distinction I should have drawn is that they need PR counsel, especially BEFORE they speak. They have handlers alright, but mostly for damage control after the fact.

There’s a lot to be gained from being obnoxious, getting noticed and getting headlines. For all we know, contemporary PR “handlers” may have orchestrated some of these incidents and be savoring the results. It’s getting harder and harder to tell what’s a real screw-up and what’s deliberately calculated.
