Life of Charlotte an open book

By Len Gutman on July 30th, 2008 In Hype!

Over the years I’ve marveled at how often our own super blogger Charlotte Risch seems to get herself in the newspaper and on TV. At first I thought maybe she was just a media whore (just kidding Char!). But after a while I just began to realize that the media loves Charlotte because she’s open to discussing her personal life in a fun and interesting way. I remember seeing an article a while back where Charlotte discussed her financial issues. That takes a certain kind of personality.

Today I opened my Republic to see Charlotte’s lovely smile in the Arizona Living section. The article is about how she met her fiance at a Cardinals game. That’s classic Charlotte.

How many of us would be willing to share our intimate moments and inner thoughts in the media? Char is a great PR person, but she’s also a great subject. It’s no wonder so many reporters and producers turn to her for stories about her clients and herself. And the truth is, when you’re out there on your own doing PR like she is, it sure doesn’t hurt to get your name and face in the spotlight every once in a while.

Charlotte seems to get it. By sharing some of her personal challenges she engages readers. I loved when she wrote about being consumeed with wedding plans and how she realized many of the boutiques in this niche needed to learn a few lessons about word of mouth marketing. I even wrote about it as an example on a blog post I wrote yesterday. Thanks Charlotte…for being real!

I truly believe you must be a shameless promoter if you have a business. I don’t use that term to mean you make people crazy by talking about yourself, I just mean that you need to share things about yourself and your business and how you can help others because the ultimate PR person for any business is the BUSINESS OWNER! As my clients know, I am always asking for stories that go beyond their basic services and business. Showing your personal side and experiences can open you up to a whole new audience at times. It makes you human and not just a biz owner trying to make a buck. And when you want to stay out there, I feel you must be a shameless promoter at times. (Not Attention Whore as Len kiddingly wrote ;)

I’ve met Charlotte - she has a sweet personality and an honest (midwest?) disposition. It’s key to good interviews and good coverage for all clients.

Be enthusisatic about what you do, be believable and in the spirit of Web 2.0, be transparent and good things happen. :-)
