Kim Kardashian producing reality show about public relations
Really, seriously, how in the world, what possibly qualifies her . . . just a few of the thoughts that ran through my head when I first saw the news. Yes, it is true, Kim is going to executive produce a reality show about her friend’s public relations agency, Command Public Relations. A quick check of the agency website shows a landing page and not much more.
The series, if picked up, will be 30-minute episodes, which, according to Kim, will “show all the ins-and-outs of PR. It’s going to be really fun. It’ll show how there’s lots of drama and crisis in the PR world.”
Lots of drama and crisis in the pr world. Sure, some days are drama-filled and yes, we have an occasional crisis, but that certainly does not define public relations.
Those of us that practice strategic communications on a regular basis will be able to see this show for what it really is. But for those who think public relations is all about parties and being a people-person, the thought that this will define my profession scares me.
And let us not forget that this type of show was attempted before, failed miserably and gave us all a bad name. Remember Lizzie Grubman, she’s the PR gal who ran over a bunch of people. Her show, called PoweR Girls only made it six episodes and took A LOT of criticism from good folks like us.
So I’m suggesting we follow the advice of Shel Holtz and stand up for our profession and let it be known what it truly is like to be in the “pr world.”

I hope they are able to somehow capture the gripping excitement of making follow up calls about a new flavored mayonnaise to leading industry publications like Progressive Grocer!

Other than “I Dream of Jeannie” which clearly depicted the real world of astronauts, I doubt there’s anything anyone can do to stand up to the world of TV and persuade anyone to show the nitty gritty profession of PR.
About the only show that comes to mind that doesn’t completely bollux things up is “Mad Men” — and that’s depicting world 50 years gone by.

Isn’t @JoePRGuy working on a Phoenix-based reality show focusing on folks in our profession? I would love to hear from him on here how his show will dig deeper and how it will reflect the industry in contrast to this program…

Oh, it’s just another Armenian opportunist. Making money while entertaining a small niche of people.
(oh, that sounds vaguely familiar)

The problem with doing a reality show on PR, is that if you showcase people who have any PR experience – they make for boring TV.
PR people understand the power of the camera enough to fear projecting a negative image of themselves in front of it. So they behave.
This is why Lizzie Grubman’s show flopped. She tried to get around the problem by starring interns. Even they were savvy enough to act like total fools while the camera’s rolled – spoiling the fun associated with typical ‘reality TV’ shows.
The grand daddy of modern reality TV – The Real World – understands the importance of showcasing people who are not smart enough to realize they are humiliating themselves on national TV. The personalities that make up the show formula are selected precisely because they will clash, argue, hook up, get drunk, ect.
It’s hard to get that kind of behavior out of people who are paid to worry about the image that their clients project.
