John McCain’s counterpunch
Fortune has a story this month about “McCain’s Econ Brain” which looks like it was meant to address the issue he took about the alleged comment of not understanding the economy. The story, on the face of it, is about Phil Gramm’s influence on John McCain.
But if you read between the lines, it’s part of a concerted attempt to reposition the “economy” story. McCain recently countered Tim Russert with “I’m very well versed in economics. I was there at the Reagan revolution.”
If The Fortune story had been pitched by the McCain campaign, it’s an amazing win. It does more than take on the “ignorance of the economy” question -a sidebar features four people on his team: The CEO, The Academic, The Filter, and the Defender.
Not bad for someone who’s gone past other tired titles, The Insurgent, The Maverick etc to become The Juggernaut, and suddenly The Media Darling.
