Cruise gets PR ‘religion’

Cruise SofaTom Cruise returned to the scene of his sofa crime this week and attempted to regain his reputation on Oprah. Associated Press writer Tara Burghart checked in with some PR “experts” to see how he did.

The best bit of insight in the article came from “Hollywood media expert Michael Levine” who said:

“When you’re in a hole, quit digging,” said Levine, founder of Los Angeles-based Levine Communications Office.

Oprah did tackled the whole “who is Suri’s daddy” issue, to which Cruise responded with the classic non-denial denial:

“I’ve had a lot of books written about me. When someone compares your daughter to Rosemary’s baby – it’s one thing to come after me. Say stuff about me,” he said. “But when it comes to my family, my children, that’s when I went, This is off the chart.”

For my money Oprah missed the big question, failing to ask Mr. Cruise to finally put all the rumors about his sexuality to rest and either deny that he is gay, come clean, or simply tell her it’s none of anyone’s business. Until he does this, the innuendo will continue.

All in all, a softball interview and typical Hollywood. Did the PR stunt work? I don’t think so. It may have given Cruise a chance to get a few things off his chest…but it didn’t do anything to answer his critics or soften his image.
