America needs a crisis PR program
Is it me, or is America experiencing a new wave of racism? I swear every time I read the news or watch CNN there’s another bassackwards American making the rest of us look bad. All of these things have taken place over the past few weeks:
- Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell refuses to marry an interracial couple in Louisiana
- A Chicago nightclub barred six African-Americans for wearing baggy pants
- South Carolina County GOP chairmen James Ulmer and Edwin Merwin write disparaging remarks about Jews
- MCSO representatives admit they round up people who “look like they come from a foreign country“
- A woman in Texas got a ticket for not speaking English
Seriously, what’s going on? Does Obama need to appoint a diversity czar? If I were from another country I might get the wrong idea from these and other reports that the U.S. is not a race friendly country. Remember when Bush appointed Karen Hughes to launch a PR campaign in the Middle East to promote American values? I think we need a similar campaign on the home front.

Agree whole hearted with you, Len. “Another bassackwards American making the rest of us look bad.” Just last week some dude said men were “obtuse” on women’s issues, even though men have suffered 80% of all 6-million+ job losses since Nov., 2007. Same dude said in Oct. 2008, “nine months of job losses is un-American.” Yes, that dude is your president, Len.

Oh, don’t forget his comments on Kanye West and a Boston police officer.

First of all, GREAT post. Thank you. I’d like to point out that discrimination and racism in America has never gone away, I think it’s just getting a little more attention lately. From restricting a woman’s right to choose her own medical care, to blatantly profiling people at airports, to our most recent disgusting racist behavior – which in my opinion is the attack on undocumented citizens in this country. After a recent trip to San Diego, I was absolutely appalled by the sight of the road blocks and military-state-like behavior I witnessed at these road blocks. It almost made me cry that we – as Americans – are treating human beings like animals. I am in no way condoning NOT getting proper documentation when traveling to this country, however, the way people are being treated is deplorable.

Funny how quickly some forget that “some dude” came into quite a mess that started long before he took office. And yes, the jobless rate IS “un-American” – too bad it’s still continuing, too bad so much work was sent overseas during the last administration, and too bad there’s not some magic potion to fix it. Fearmongering does not help. And what do job losses have to do with women’s issues, marketing $ociolgist? Clever name, by the way.
