Mittelsteadt moving to McMurry
Sam Mittelsteadt, Lifestyle Editor at the East Valley Tribune is moving on.
After 11 years (and 5 different jobs!) at the East Valley/Scottsdale Tribune, I’ve resigned to take a position as a senior editor at McMurry, a custom publishing company that produces magazines for clients including the CBS Network, The Ritz-Carlton hotel chain and Amtrak. My last day as a Tribune staffer will be Friday, Aug. 29.
No word on his replacement or a restructure in the department yet.

Dang, it’s getting harder and harder to have good long-term relationships with journalists in this town. It’s hard out there for a flack.

No brainer – Same skill set, likely better compensation and less hassles.

I worked with sam for a few years (and even sat next to him for a while) and
he is one of the last people i worked with at the Tribune. the turnover is
incredible. Its really a shame to see the paper go so far downhill. And most
people arent necessarily leaving for much better jobs. tho, it looks like
Sam is.

The Tribune staffer who’ll now be directing much of the features coverage is Julia Zolondz: (480) 898-6305 or jzolondz@evtrib.com. The paper is trying a team approach to features coverage – Julia will be the person who handles story idea creation and visuals, while other people will handle line editing, freelancers, finances and the like.
I’ll still be writing style articles for the Tribune on a weekly basis – everything from Great Stuff columns to What’s in Store features (and the blog, too). The only thing that changes as far as that goes is my contact e-mail: from the imaginatively chosen smittelsteadt@evtrib.com to the imaginatively chosen smittelsteadt@hotmail.com.
Best,
-sam

Best wishes to you, Sam, in your new position. I’m glad you’ll still be contributing.

Thank you for the kind comments, both here and via e-mail.
Moving out of newspapers after 20 years was an intimidating decision but I am sort of blissful here at McMurry during my honeymoon period. We have “free food Fridays”! (It’s the thoughtful little things that make me so giddy.)
Please keep in touch with any suggestions for the Trib style coverage. I know many people might wonder when it will fall off my radar — but as long as they keep paying me for it, I’ll be happy to keep writing about it!
Best,
-sam
