You get what you put into it
I’m looking forward to the PRSA Holiday Mixer tomorrow at the Valley Ho-Ho-Ho! Will you be there? Over the past year and half, I’ve found a lot of benefit out of my membership with the PRSA organization. I’ve met some talented PR pros, learned a lot to benefit my business and have grown some great media relationships through the media breakfasts and speed pitching.
I am always asked if its worth it to be a member of PRSA and for the reasons above I tell them it is. But, as people continue to cut back and evaluate where they are spending their money and time, I think its good to ask yourself “Am I making the most out of the organizations I belong to and taking advantage of the opportunities given to me?” Because while I feel PRSA is a benefit to me, its because I do something with the membership. I joined some PRSA committees, I went to some happy hours and events where I didn’t know anyone and started to make connections and enjoyed what I was learning.
Even though I blog and report my experiences here, I have learned to use those “reporting” characteristics in any meeting or event I go to now, PR related or not. Being interactive in the situation seems to keep my A.D.D. in check, because I have to pay attention and want to walk away learning something. I ask questions, sit near the front and converse with the people around me. I want to make my money work for me. So, whether you are a Chamber member, in a woman’s group or communications organization, its only worth what you put into it. What could you do to be more involved in the groups you are a part of in 2009?

It’s true that for any organization I commit my time and resources to, I find that being a contributing member helps build relationships which provide opportunities to connect in a more meaningful way with my peers and potential business network. It can also raise awareness of my capabilities which can open doors to future business opportunities — well worth the investment!

So true! I just attended the IABC holiday mixer. If you sit around by yourself and are too shy to get out there and mingle, your membership is going to waste. I met so many wonderful people while making my rounds around the room. In fact, I blogged about my experience with the group, too!
