Remind yourself of who you love, not what you love, this Valentine’s Day

Ella and Linda at lakeYou’re more than just a PR person, right?   Holidays and special days like Valentine’s Day are a good time to step back.   Who are you, really?   Are you the workhorse of the company, managing data and events and churning out press releases and tweeting like mad?

Sometimes you need a way to step outside that professional box and remind yourself of what makes you, you.    Pamela Slim here in Arizona has a guest post on her blog, Escape from Cubicle Nation, from a workshop attendee who writes about the long winding road to doing what you love.   It’s a wonderful post, but I see it as only part of the equation.

It’s important not only to focus on what you love, but who you love.    It, not your profession, is what defines you.   Public relations is a career that requires you to serve others in fulfillment of the larger goal of relationships with the community.   We often, however, sacrifice our own personal relationships in pursuit of that goal.

This Valentine’s Day, be selfish and build relationships with your personal community.  Me?  I’m proud to tell people not that I’m in public relations, but that I’m “Ella’s daughter.”
