Maybe you need a Monday armchair quarterback
If you face a PR problem at work and have no one to turn to, what do you do?
I’ve found the one thing that PR professionals crave most of all is a wise, neutral sounding board. Someone who isn’t “in” on the office politics, isn’t afraid of what the boss is going to say, and can illuminate both sides of the issue. Someone who isn’t scared of the playing field because they’re not on it.
The insidious part of corporate life is that the bogeymen can make you doubt yourself. You look behind you, questioning the path you took, and are too afraid to look ahead of you, for fear of what’s behind the next ominous tree.
One of my clients, a corporate public relations manager, was so stressed from the rigors of her job that she questioned her own decisions and strategy. She found great comfort in my perspective. I had been in “the game,” but fortunately was not in HER particular game. I could offer insights and coach her from the sidelines 1,000 miles away.
Find your armchair quarterback, and use him or her without compunction.
